FIEGE commences operations at multi-user center in Zülpich

Healthcare facility stores and supplies medical products for all of Europe

Zülpich/Greven, 1 July 2021 After a mere eleven months of construction, FIEGE completed the new logistics centre for its Healthcare business unit in Zülpich. The 54,000 squares metres-large logistics centre is based at the Römerallee industrial estate. From here, FIEGE will oversee, amongst other things, logistical activities for Dräger. Zülpich, which is located in the tri-city area of Cologne-Bonn-Aachen, will become the central hub for the logistics and distribution of the Lübeck-based enterprise. FIEGE will supply healthcare facilities and industrial customers, public-sector clients as well as specialised retailers with products by Dräger, the international leader in the fields of medical and safety technology.

“FIEGE’s experience in healthcare paired with their expansive service portfolio makes them a crucial partner for us. Their high degree of flexibility and innovative strength will serve us well on our path to future growth”, says Jürgen Gerhold, Corporate Projects at Dräger. Dräger’s medical technology division manufactures, for example, ventilators for intensive care and emergency services, but also anaesthesia machines or equipment for premature and neonatal care. The company is a leading global manufacturer of safety technology for personal protective equipment, protection equipment solutions for plants, and gas detectors.

FIEGE will be creating around 250 new jobs at the location in Zülpich. “In early August of last year, we celebrated the start of construction of the new logistics centre which was attended by the Transport Minister of the State of North-Rhine Westphalia, Hendrik Wüst and Günter Rosenke, who at the time was the incumbent head of the district authority. It is incredibly impressive to witness just how fast the new facility has taken shape. We are thrilled to have been able to win over the family business of FIEGE for our business location here in Zülpich. FIEGE will be one of the largest employers in our region”, Zülpich’s mayor, Ulf Hürtgen says.

The new ensemble is comprised of four larger buildings and a smaller unit with two separate office buildings and a gatehouse. The logistics centre is certified to German Sustainable Building Council standards and features a charging infrastructure for electrical mobility, high-efficiency LED lighting, a comprehensive building management system plus a photovoltaic installation. The electricity thus generated can be used directly by FIEGE which runs the facility. Some 135 trees and a good 2,500 shrubs have been planted outside to green up the façade. The building’s architecture also supports a flexible response to the customers’ many different requirements. “We are pleased to be able to take up operations at the new FIEGE location in Zülpich on time despite the Covid-19 pandemic, and thus to welcome many new colleagues into the FIEGE family. A big thank you goes to the City of Zülpich. From the very beginning we felt that we were welcome here as a contract logistician and as a family business – we could always count on the City’s support at every stage of the project’s development”, says Jan Fiege, Managing Director Real Estate at FIEGE.

Goldbeck International as the general contractor, and the architectural firm of Jürgen Schlake implemented the new development together with FIEGE Real Estate. The project’s investor is LIP Invest from Munich, a leading investment manager for logistical properties in Germany. Bodo Hollung, shareholder and managing director of LIP Invest, is happy to witness the completion of the new logistical facility for which LIP invested around EUR 50 million last year: “Both its convenient location in one of Germany’s most attractive logistical regions and the quality, very modern architecture for which FIEGE is known, quickly convinced us. We are very happy to further diversify our logistics fund with this outstanding property.”

Merely the technical systems for on-site intra-logistics still need to be completed for logistical operations to begin. New personnel were already recruited while construction was ongoing. Some new positions have already been filled. Currently, the search centres especially on team leaders and industrial employees. “Dräger holds a special meaning for us because of its broad product range as a manufacturer of medical and safety technology products. And we are prepared to handle time-sensitive orders flexibly and fast, and to come up with creative solutions for special assignments”, says Dirk Berlemann, Managing Director FIEGE Healthcare. “To achieve this, we are putting together a well-trained and experienced team.”

Working at FIEGE’s Healthcare Logistics unit offers a highly interesting, sustainable and future-oriented range of responsibilities with a heightened awareness of quality. The FIEGE team in Zülpich will initially conduct many trials of the individual process flows at the warehouse to ensure a successful production start at the end of the year, which is when the first consignments will officially leave the FIEGE warehouse.
