New logistics centre: Fiege settles in Emmerich am Rhein

So könnte der neue Fiege-Standort in Emmerich aussehen.

64,000 square metres dedicated to logistics

Emmerich, 14th December 2018. Fiege will build a new logistics site on a 12.5 hectares-large piece of land in Emmerich am Rhein. A 64,000 square metres-large logistics facility will be built in two phases in the region bordering to the north-west of the Land of North Rhine-Westphalia. Fiege’s Real Estate Development unit will take charge of developing the logistics centre.

“We will be submitting the building application this month and hope to start with the first building phase shortly after”, says Jan Fiege, Managing Director Real Estate at Fiege. September 2019 is when the first three warehouses which together will provide 32,000 square metres of space, will go into operation. During a second building phase, an additional 32,000 square metres of warehouse space will be built. Fiege expects to recruit around 75 people for permanent employment at the new facility from both the commercial and industrial segment.

Consumer goods are stored, finished and dispatched

“Our operations in Emmerich cater to a client from the consumer goods segment whose products we will store there, then pick and pack and send out. We will also provide a range of value added services and oversee quality control of the products”, Jan Fiege shared. He also emphasised: “The new facility in Emmerich does not impact the Bocholt site whatsoever. It will remain in operation. The new Emmerich facility is of strategic relevance to Fiege, especially since it provides optimal requirements for our client’s multi-channel profile.” Fiege will serve all sales channels for its client from the Emmerich location and send out goods for the brick-and-mortar retail trade, as well as mobile retailing and e-tailing.

Awarding the plots in the Nettpark industrial park to the logistics provider Fiege was also good news for the communal decision-maker. “We have been recording a distinct rise in the demand for this space since 2016”, said Arndt Wilms, Managing Director at Erschließungsgesellschaft Emmerich am Rhein (EGE), the company developing the site. Next to optimal trimodal accessibility to transport infrastructures, the land proved to be particularly interesting for investors because of its size. “These days, plots of that size are a rare find. And if, as was the case here, there is no legacy contamination which needs to be removed prior to construction, they are particularly appealing”, adds Reinhard Barthel, also EGE Managing Director.

Emmerich set to become a key logistics location

In the end there were multiple prospects with different concepts, including investor models from project developers. “We ultimately opted for the Fiege Group. As a tradition-steeped family business, Fiege enjoys an excellent reputation in the logistics sector. We believe that the company will make a sustained investment in Emmerich and that its logistical activities on location will further strengthen Emmerich as a logistics site”, added EGE Managing Director, Arndt Wilms.

And even Emmerich’s mayor and interim business promoter, Peter Hinze, was pleased about the addition: “Because of the commitment of the Fiege Group, Emmerich is becoming more relevant again as a logistics location. Many new jobs can expect to be created in Emmerich.”
